Let’s think about Casino Royale Bond Girls
In CR, there are two Bond girls: The primary Bond girl is British (Eva Green: a French actress playing British), and the olive-skinned “exotic” (Italian) Bond girl who is the sacrificial lamb (Caterina Murino).
We know for a fact that Eon is searching for an “exotic” (Latina) Bond girl. It would be absolutely insane, then, for them to cast Gemma Arterton as the main Bond girl, and give us the same formula as last movie. They’re trying to break away from formula!
So I remain full of doubt. I really, really think she’s got a secondary role or even smaller.

Looking at the pics over at Mi6.com I’m convinced we’ll be introduced to “M”‘s new secretary, Miss Moneypenny.
Ms. Arterton seems kind of sexy in a homely way- so I can’t see her as being attractive enough to be a 007 conquest- nor does she fit the descriptions we’ve heard of the leading lady.
No, Ms Arterton is young and looks very innocent. The type to do well under a stern supervisor but also niave enough to fall into a hidden, mad crush on the mysterious agent that often visits her boss.
I put my money on ‘Penny- a brief scene that introduces her. We’ll see in her eyes that she’s immediately smitten by 007- he’ll catch it to and offer her a charming smile.
But this Moneypenny, at first, will be quieter. Too shy to have a voice- just yet.
The scene will be over before we have a chance to process the fact that we’ve just met our most famous secretary/assistant in filmdom…

I love this scenario.

I thought Casino Royale and the new franchise were trying to move away from the old formula, and having Moneypenny, rather than a new person like Villiers, is just a repeat of the old tired formula. Boring.

Jct, I disagree. While CR was an attempt to move away from the formula, it was also an effort to move back to Fleming; back to the energy of the source material. Moneypenny was always a part of that.
A core crew of regulars is not an “old tired formula.” I don’t think Moneypenny is played out anymore than M or Bond himself are.
