Happy Birthday Robert Carlyle

Born this day in 1961, a lameass Bond villain, but a terrific actor in things like Trainspotting and The Full Monty (a film I absolutely adore, and for which he won a BAFTA).

Cold-blooded murder is a filthy business.

Well, they never quite did the “can feel no pain” angle of his character right, but I liked the depth Carlyle brought to the part despite his lack of screen time. His scenes with Brosnan were terrific. Renard could have been a great villain on his own, but I think his part was diminished by shoving him in there with Elektra. In fact, one of the issues with TWINE is that it does seem to cram an awful lot of unrelated elements together in the hope that the whole will exceed the sum – sadly, the movie doesn’t quite get there.

I agree. Renard could have been a great villain, and Carlyle can’t be faulted, but he is unrealized; he isn’t all that villainous, his love for Elektra (in common with Bond) makes him sympathetic, his screen time is lopsided (he’s a secondary villain except he owns the final climax), and the whole “can’t feel” thing is sloppy.
